Some things to think about if you want to start an ecommerce business

As eTail Support announces a new program to support start-up online retail businesses on Monday I thought it was a good time to share some thoughts about starting an online retail business.

Starting an online retail business can be a great venture, it’s a way to build a business with an income that is independent of the number of hours that you work and to build up an asset with capital value, but there are several important aspects you should carefully consider before you commit to starting your business:

Business Plan

Like any business, an online retail business needs a well-thought-out business plan. This should include your goals, financial projections, and a detailed marketing strategy.

Product Selection

Decide what you want to sell. Is there a demand for the products in the market? How will you source your products? You should also think about your product range. Having too few may limit your audience, while having too many could complicate your supply chain and inventory management.

The people that we see succeed in online retail do so when they sell products that they really understand, where they have some intellectual property in the product. Ten years ago, you could buy random products in China and sell them at a good profit online, today that is a lot harder.

Market Research

Once you know your products you need to understand who your customers are, their needs, and the level of competition in your niche. This will help you to differentiate your business from your competitors.

Again, this will be a lot easier if you really know and understand he products that you are selling and the customers that want them.

Supply Chain Management

Plan in advance how you will manage inventory and fulfilment. Will you use a dropshipping model, will you use a third party fulfilment or will you keep inventory on-hand?

Website and Technology

A website is the foundation of your online business. It needs to be user-friendly, mobile-friendly, and search engine optimized. You should also think about your order processing system, how you will keep track of stock and how you will manage your financial reporting. eTail Support can help!

Marketing Strategy

Decide how you will attract and retain customers. Will you use social media, content marketing, search engine optimization (SEO), email marketing, pay-per-click advertising, or a combination of these?

You can very easily spend millions on marketing – and I have personally seen campaigns that were run on social media for next to nothing outperform competitive programs that cost $50k.

You can run an effective marketing campaign with a very low budget if you have the right approach (and lots of social media)

Customer Service

Excellent customer service is critical in online retail. How will you handle inquiries, complaints, returns, and refunds?

Legal Considerations

You must understand the legal obligations of running an online business. This includes privacy laws, business licenses, and taxes. It's also critical to create terms and conditions and a privacy policy for your online store.

Financial Planning

Determine how much capital you will need to start your business and keep it running. This should include website setup costs, product sourcing, marketing, and operational costs. You will need ore money than you think – so make sur that you have a reasonable buffer in place.

Growth and Scalability

Finally, think about your long-term plans. Can your business scale as demand increases? Can your suppliers meet the increased demand? Will you scale by selling overseas or by selling through multiple channels in your home market?

Starting an online retail business can exciting and very rewarding, but it requires careful planning and execution. Remember that success rarely comes overnight so stay patient and persistent.
